Howdy!
Rather than try to cram a lot in the profile section, I figure this first post would be a good jumping off point on a few things for you to chew on:
— This blog will primarily be about hunting, fishing and shooting guns. If you don’t like those things I suggest you head off into the sunset because that’s what’s going to be highlighted here.
I fish, I shoot and I hunt. So do my kids.
My wife fishes and likes to camp out. The latter is OK with me, but not my favorite thing to do. Still, getting into the woods is a good thing just about any time possible and so pitching a tent, tossing a bag and sitting by a fire is on the list.
— I worked for 25 years in the newspaper industry, which is morphing. Some say newspapers are dying … I’d be close to sitting in that camp, but believe in the basic belief that newspapers have value.
People don’t call a Web site wanting to know when their kid’s baseball photo or dance team result will appear. They want it in the newspaper, because newspapers have impact. It’s just that in today’s Web-centric world they’re losing ad revenue along with readership, the latter because so much is available to dilute someone’s interest.
— I will be writing about North Alabama, Alabama, the Southeast and then anything else that interests me. You’ll find news items, opinion items, funny things, probably some boring things (hopefully not!), photos and some other off-the-cuff items.
I will not blow smoke up your ass and tell you something is important, then ignore it. I plan to focus on hunting, fishing and shooting sports because those are the driving forces in the outdoors world and the economic generators for the industry.
In Alabama each year, about $6 billion is generated by the fishing and hunting industries, from the Mom ‘n Pop bait shops to the giant companies like PRADCO based in Decatur. Six billion dollars! City leaders slobber and kiss butts when a company brings in a big plant, yet often choose to ignore an industry that generates billions of dollars and thousands of jobs. I think those people are morons, but all too often you can’t help stupid.
— Ignorance means you haven’t learned something. There are a lot of things I’m ignorant about and hope to learn about them. If I fail to, or choose not to, then I guess I would be stupid.
— I plan to have fun, break some news stories, laugh a bit and will probably step on some toes now and then. Such is life.
I hope you come along for the ride.
